The greater freedom of three-dimensional forms through technological advances and the vogue of mannish ladies’ watches.Watch Trends in the 1990s

MIM (metal injection molding) and other innovations in processing technology greatly expanded the range of design in the 1990s, making it easier to create models with three-dimensional curved surfaces featuring integrated streamlined cases and watchbands, especially in sports watches. Sports models with a strong feel of gadgetry using the three-dimensional expression of heat forging also became popular. The introduction of CAD also improved the degree of freedom in three-dimensional design during this period. In ladies' watches, larger unisex models and mannish designs with multi-hand dials became popular due to women's social advancement and changing mindsets. In addition, the development of new mechanisms and movements such as the Kinetic and the Thermic, which replaced the battery-powered quartz watches, also flourished.
