A factory to realize the big dream of
“manufacturing domestic watches.”
The establishment of Seikosha

Seikosha, a timepiece-manufacturing factory, was established in May 1892. Thanks to the efforts of its technical director, Tsuruhiko Yoshikawa, the company succeeded in manufacturing wall clocks just two months later in July.

Kintaro Hattori, who had been dreaming of producing watches domestically since the establishment of K. Hattori & Co., , took advantage of the success of his retail business to finally start manufacturing watches in Japan. He recruited Tsuruhiko Yoshikawa, a mechanical engineer, and in 1892, established Seikosha, a timepiece-manufacturing factory. Seikosha began manufacturing wall clocks, and in 1895, began manufacturing its first pocket watch, the Timekeeper. While manufacturing pocket watches, which were mainstream at the time, the company continued to work with engineers on prototypes and research to improve their performance in preparation for the coming age of the wristwatch.
