In the 1980s, people's lifestyles became more diversified, and the number of people owning multiple watches increased as people used different watches for different occasions. The development of quartz movements accelerated, and thinner, more compact watches could be designed to look like accessories. The popularity of thin dress watches increased due to the popularity of traditional fashions among both men and women. Among them, the square-shaped variations were particularly popular outside Japan, and the flamboyant look of gold or gold two-tone watches was favored. Also, as marine leisure activities, such as diving, yachting, and surfing became more common, divers' watches also grew in popularity.
