A design that harmonized
high legibility and a sporty aestheticsSportsmatic 5

With its strong lugs, water resistance, and stainless steel bracelet, this watch drew much attention for its sporty design.

This was Seiko's first watch that was designed, engineered, and manufactured by Suwa Seikosha under Seiko's planning in 1963, including the movement, dial, case, and bracelet. In addition to a simple automatic winding structure, water resistance, and a shock-resistant mechanism, the watch was also thoroughly designed to be easy to read. In particular, the integrated window frame that displayed the date and day of the week in a single window was groundbreaking. In addition, by placing the crown at the 4 o'clock position so that it was embedded in the case, the design expressed the innovative nature of the automatic winding function. The Sportsmatic 5 was highly praised for its marketability, and in 1964 it was the first watch in the watch field to win the Good Design Award.

The structure for having the day of the week and the date displayed side by side in the same window was very groundbreaking.
