An organization created to conduct design;
a first in Seiko’s history.Inauguration of the Production Department’s Design Section

The establishment of the Design Section of the Production Department and the subsequent hiring of designers led to the systematization and evolution of Seiko watch design.

In 1956, the Production Department’s Design Section was established at Suwa Seikosha. This department was created to strengthen exterior planning, design, and manufacturing, and could be considered the start of Seiko’s design organization. The main components of a watch include the dial, case, and watchband, but since watch cases were predominantly round until the 1950s, case design was mainly a matter of variation of the lugs, and the watchband was often a leather strap procured from a manufacturer, so the design of the dial was the main part of the section’s work. Later, university graduate designers joined Daini Seikosha in 1958 and K. Hattori & Co. and Suwa Seikosha the following year, gradually forming an organization that promoted total design.
