Production of ladies' watches goes into full swing
with the development of movements designed for women.Seiko Merit

These photos show the Seiko Merit and Seiko Solar. At the time, watches for women were mainly small and slender in design.

The Seiko Merit was the first postwar watch collection to adopt a small movement specially designed for women. This was the start of full-scale production of ladies’ watches, and movement development progressed with the Merit (Type 6) and Solar (Type 5) in 1957, followed by Purple (Type 6 with three hands) the following year. At that time, brand names were classified by movement, not by design group. Many of the rectangular models of the time were decorated on both sides in an Art Deco style, and the tonneau-shaped movement was made to look slender by the decorative design.

Viewed from the back, the shape of the case back follows that of the overhanging case. This design was devised to accommodate the tonneau-shaped caliber.
