01Radiant Time
A “timeless radiance” that brightly illuminates the city of Tokyo.
How can we polish metal to achieve a beautiful distortion-free finish? In the long history of watchmaking, various polishing techniques have been studied. Among them, I was particularly drawn to a processing technique called Zaratsu polishing. Zaratsu polishing is a processing technique that involves polishing a material by pressing it against a flat rotating plate coated with an abrasive to create a “uniformly smooth surface” and a beautiful mirror surface. For the base model of the design, I chose manufactured King Seiko creation created in the 1970s. This model, characterized by its simple and bold shape, still retains its brilliance after more than 50 years, thanks to its distortion-free mirror surfaces made possible by the Zaratsu polishing technique.
In this project, while utilizing the Zaratsu polishing technique, I pursued an ideal watch form that I myself would find attractive. The most distinctive feature of the design is the form of the case, which is composed of numerous facets. The carefully polished mirror surfaces of the case reflect light in various directions, making them sparkle and shine. The dial is also surrounded by a series of three-dimensional ridges forming 60 surfaces that also function as minute markers. By giving a single shape a dual role of decoration and function, I aimed to create the ideal form of a watch.
I repeated simulations many times, paying close attention to the balance of details. Please pay attention to the beauty of the light emitted from the case and dial. You will be able to feel the unique brilliance created by Zaratsu polishing. As a designer, I want to design watches that can make people feel a little more positive. With this in mind, I designed a watch that will continually brighten the hearts of those who wear it.
