02PUT ON TIME

A playful take on wearing watches.

I chose Seiko’s diver’s watch launched in 1975 as the base model. This model was nicknamed “TUNA” by Seiko fans because of its resemblance to a can of tuna, and it has enjoyed much love. The shape of the watch, which has been thoroughly designed for safety to support divers in the deep sea, is, to say the least, quite unique. I thought that if I could convert this diver’s watch into a completely different category, I would surely be able to create a new watch that has never been seen before, while retaining Seiko’s originality. I was strongly convinced of this and began to formulate an idea. The result was this PUT ON TIME creation.

The base of this button-like design is a unique diver’s watch shaped like a can of tuna. It is a rebirth into a whole new world.

The inspiration for the idea came from something very ordinary. It was something we do every day without thinking, like fastening and unfastening buttons when putting on and taking off clothes. I thought that if we could put on and take off a watch as easily as we fasten and unfasten a button, more people would wear it. Buttons on clothes are made of smooth curved surfaces and are very comfortable to touch with the fingers, aren’t they? Aiming for a similar feel, I focused on the round shape and delicate polishing process, including the glass.

The elements of “buttoning” and “unbuttoning” were added to the watch itself to pursue “tactile comfort” from a different perspective from the usual watch production process.

By unscrewing the part attached to the case back side, the watch can be worn not just on the wrist, but also on various other places.

For example, you can enjoy changing the look of your clothes by replacing the buttons on your jackets with this button watch. The PUT ON TIME watch was inspired by the idea of such everyday playfulness.

While reducing the size of a mechanical watch, it was a repeated process of trial and error to find a size that is comfortable to touch and fasten. This time, I focused on a product that “can be easily fastened to the wrist like a button.” The structure of the case, the shape of the strap, and the method of attaching the watch itself were all contemplated from scratch. I hope you will be able to feel the difference from conventional watches. And just like shoes or hats, I hope that people will enjoy coordinating it with their mood and clothes of the day.

This product embodies the desire to be able to change watches as easily and naturally as one changes clothes in the morning.
